Exterior Plas manufactures and installs windows and doors for schools and education estates across London, Essex and the South East. Education has been one of our core sectors for many years, alongside local councils and housing associations, and we’re a family run company, founded in 1988 by Andy Sheen. Our head office sits with our factory and showroom on Weald Hall Lane in Thornwood, near Epping, so when you plan school glazing you’ll speak to the people who make and fit the frames.
It’s a short chain.
We look at each building on its own terms, because school glazing has to cope with heavy daily use and limited access while pupils are on site. Most estates need replacement windows and doors, and often repairs too. Buildings vary too.
A single site might have an older main building next to newer extensions and teaching blocks, each with its own frames. That’s common. It means every elevation needs its own check of sizes and opening styles, as well as how pupils and staff move past the glass during a busy day.
At survey, raise how windows open in classrooms and stairwells, and where safety glazing is needed in doors and low panes or busy circulation areas. Secure, hard wearing entrance and exit doors matter too, as do heat loss and draughts in older teaching blocks and matching the look of existing or heritage frames.
We don’t publish one fixed specification for schools, because the right answer depends on the building and how it’s used. When we quote, we’ll set out what each product offers, so you know exactly what’s being fitted.
You can choose uPVC, aluminium or timber windows, plus doors for anywhere from main entrances to outbuildings, and here’s how each range tends to fit a school estate.
uPVC windows and doors come from REHAU systems we fabricate in our own Thornwood factory, using CNC machinery to make each frame to measure, which helps where older walls don’t suit standard sizes. You can see how it works on our factory page.
Aluminium is often chosen for larger openings and more modern blocks.
Timber and heritage windows suit older school buildings where the original look matters to governors or the local authority, and secondary glazing can be an option where replacing the frames isn’t practical.
Doors come in uPVC, composite, aluminium and timber, and bi-fold doors also work where a hall or teaching space opens onto outside areas.
Browse the full ranges on our windows and doors pages. Not sure which material suits a block? We’d rather look at it with you than guess.
We’ll plan the work around your school calendar from the very first conversation, so bring your term dates and any known closures to that first meeting.
Then we can be straight about what’s realistic. That’ll depend on the number of openings and the condition of the existing frames, as well as site access and whether rooms are occupied while the work goes ahead. We won’t promise a programme before we’ve surveyed.
Every estate is different. Timing is agreed with you as part of the quote, based on what we’ve seen on site.
The same team that supplies your windows and doors can also handle fire products and later repairs. One company, start to finish.
Our fire products range includes fire doors and fire rated windows, and requirements vary by building, which is why we don’t list blanket ratings here. Ask us for the rating and certification detail of any product before you specify it, and check it against your own fire risk assessment and the advice of your fire safety advisers. We’ll go through it with you.
Our reactive maintenance department was set up in 2007, a natural step on from the manufacturing and installing we’d been doing since 1988. It covers window and door repairs, from blown units and draughty frames to doors that won’t close properly. For a school, that keeps knowledge of your products in one place.
Tell us about your school estate and we’ll arrange a free quote. Call 01992 578 903 or email enquiries@exteriorplas.com, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. You can also use our contact page or visit us at Weald Hall Lane, Thornwood, Epping, Essex CM16 6NR.

Yes. Education is one of our long standing sectors. We cover London and the South East, Essex included, from our head office and factory in Thornwood, Epping, so most school sites across the region are within easy reach.
We’re happy to plan around your term dates and holidays, though we don’t commit to dates before a survey. Access and scope vary from site to site, as do lead times, so dates are agreed with you once we’ve seen the building.
